Butte County’s high country turns into a winter wonderland once the snow season begins. Whether by ski, snowshoe, or snowmobile, one of the best local spots to experience winter sports is in Jonesville.
This tiny but historic town just past Butte Meadows lies within Lassen National Forest not too far from the headwaters of Butte Creek. The Jonesville Staging Area off of Humboldt Road is the starting point for a variety of winter adventures. Big Bald Rock is a granite batholith in the Plumas National Forest that is a prominent fixture along the skyline of certain parts of Lake Oroville, and is a beautiful vista point on a clear day. Because it’s a fairly large area, Bald Rock is a perfect place for hiking and backpacking!
Enjoy spectacular views overlooking Lake Oroville and the Sacramento Valley. Children of all ages will have fun searching for the “snailrock” or sitting inside the shelter, complete with a stove. www.explorebuttecounty.com/activities/explore-big-bald-rock |

Situated above the city of Oroville, the North Table Mountain Ecological Reserve, more commonly known as simply Table Mountain, offers up a chance to hike through a truly unique natural area.
Formed by ancient lava flows, the underlying basalt rock on the mesa holds water, resulting in spectacular annual wildflower blooms, stunning vernal pools, and dramatic but fleeting waterfalls. www.explorebuttecounty.com/activities/hike-table-mountain |

Dive right into Butte County’s gold rush past by visiting the Forks of Butte Creek Recreation Area. Managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), this beautifully forested area is just north of the quaint Sierra Nevada foothill town of Magalia — home of the 54-pound “Dogtown Nugget.”
A short trail connects the Doe Mill Bridge parking area with the campground while following the east bank of Butte Creek. The Butte Creek Trail also starts at Doe Mill Bridge and travels south along the west side of the creek for one mile before dissolving along the canyon’s edge. We recommend you go as far as you’re comfortable, but this is a good hike for the adventurous of all ages. www.explorebuttecounty.com/activities/discover-the-forks-of-butte-creek-recreation-area |

here are plenty of reasons why the pedestrian-only Yahi Trail is one of the most popular hikes in Bidwell Park: a variety of micro-environments, Big Chico Creek, large shady sycamores, and beautiful spring wildflower blooms. The path mostly follows Big Chico Creek, has lots of shade, and features beautiful wild flowers in the spring, particularly late March.
You’ll find great spots to stop for picnics, swim in the creek, and lay out and relax. Make sure to bring a swimsuit and water shoes for enjoying a dip in one of the many natural swimming holes you’ll pass.
